What Is Study Hall?

Dog training with our expert trainer

Study Hall is The Retreat’s unique small-group training program, designed for dogs who need support with impulse control, confidence, or social manners.

Study Hall combines the best of dog obedience training with all the enrichment of our kennel-free community, making it perfect for dogs who need a little extra help to thrive in our pack environment.

Sessions are held Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am – 2 pm, with pickup until 3 pm included in the cost, and are limited to just six dogs per day to ensure personalized attention.

Each Study Hall session is $60, which includes small group training, trainer-supported daycare integration, personalized training plans, daily report cards, and assigned homework for you to continue your dog’s training at home.

All Study Hall dogs must arrive by 9 am to participate in training for the day. Preschool dogs can arrive no earlier than 8:30 am, while all other grades including Orientation dogs can be dropped off as early as 6 am with no additional cost. Study Hall dogs picked up after 3 pm will owe an additional $30 after-school daycare fee.

What Makes Our Dog Training Program Unique?

Unlike traditional obedience training or board-and-train programs, Study Hall is embedded into your dog’s regular daycare routine. That means your pup gets to practice obedience and social skills in real-world situations. We believe dog training should be compassionate, personalized, and fun! Our trainers:

  • Utilize relationship based training and a strong understanding of canine behavior

  • Design training plans around each dog’s needs, energy levels, and social comfort

  • Provide a progress report after each session, so you know exactly what your pup is learning

What Do We Teach in Study Hall?

From basic commands to better manners, our obedience training for dogs includes:

  • Calm, respectful group behavior in a high-energy pack setting

  • Confidence-building with new people and dogs

  • Sit, stay, down, and recall

  • Walking skills, focus work, and impulse control

Whether your dog is a social butterfly or a shy pup in need of confidence, our program adapts to support them where they are.

We also help you reinforce lessons at home! After every session, you'll receive a progress report with clear takeaways and homework for you and your pup to work on between Study Hall visits. You can always chat with our trainers during pick-up, or schedule a training phone call by appointment. And if your furry friend has already done puppy training or other dog obedience training elsewhere, we’ll happily build on that foundation with consistent, compassionate reinforcement.

sUCCESS STORIES FROM OUR PACK

“I adopted a rescue Australian Shepherd that came to us as reactive to other dogs, hyperactive, and impulsive. We tried four other daycares before finding Carolyn's K9 retreat. The other daycares were good to him but just put him in time out in an enclosed kennel when he was too aggressive and barky with other dogs. We spent hundreds of dollars on trainers who had great tips, but none worked. Then we found Carolyn's.

Elle and the other staff work with each dog to reward appropriate behavior. The facility is small and they are able to refine the personalities they put together in a play yard in order to ensure success. They focus on keeping the dog calm and intervene before the behavior gets too out of line. This is the only daycare I found that doesn't use kennels which made my dog more reactive than ever. Elle is so gentle, calm and intuitive with each dog. She gives a report card of behavior worked on and suggestions for home work that is so helpful. Study Hall is more expensive than a regular daycare but every session is intensive training for each dog.

We've used Carolyn's for a year now. I can now take my dog on walks near other dogs and sit in the Vet's office without a total meltdown. I even sat on the Starbucks patio last week with him beside me. We could have never done this without the training from Elle at Carolyn's. They are well worth the money. My dog gets to play appropriately with other dogs and comes home exhausted. My favorite thing is during the day, they post photos on Facebook of the dogs at play and rest. I love seeing how my guy is doing and laugh at some of the other funny faces he is playing with.”
